Bar Polski London Review

Bar Polski is featured in these Guides:

If you can pronounce the name ‘Nazdrowie - The Polish Bar’ after a face full of charcoal filtered vodka made from organic potatoes, you’re a better man than I am. The Polish Bar is a refreshing variance to a lot of the London bars frequented by the high-cheekboned beautiful people of our capital. This small establishment is tucked down a side street of Holborn and if you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably miss it.

If like us, you imagined Poland to be cold, The Polish Bar confirms it. The interior decor is an arctic concoction of blues, whites and silvers with mirrored walls, which not only makes the bar seem bigger but also adds to the chill factor.

The real charm about this bar is that the emphasis is on the polish experience. The decor is subtle, the music is background and the staff actually sound polish and whether, at the end of a shift, they hang up their aprons and lapse into east-end accents, there is a feel of real authenticity.

The food is polish cuisine or I should rather say ‘polskie dania’. If you don’t fancy the Bigos at £5.60 (a stew of sauerkraut, cabbage, mixed and smoked meats and plums), try the totally unpronounceable Barszaz Czerwany z Uszkami for £3 (that's polish beetroot soup with dumplings).

The Polish Bar’s real allure is probably the copious amounts of alcohol they keep stashed at the back. This includes over 50 types of vodka which can be ordered in shots or mixed up to make death by lethal concoction and at only £2.10 per shot, it’s a cheap death. They also serve some wine and polish lagers. We started off with the tamer spirits such as the Lancut orange, progressed to the Krupnik (a rich dark brown honey and spice vodka) and passed out after sampling the 40% alcohol Zhota Woda gold leaf vodka infused with aniseed herbs.

The bar can be hired for private functions but outside drinkers are allowed in until closing time when the late license kicks in and partygoers can drink on unhindered. A great polish experience and oh, did we mention the vodka? None (28 11 2002)

“This is a great little bar tucked down a side street in Holborn. It's a great start to the night if you really like vodka. I am particularly found of the Rose and also Pear flavoured vodkas. It's fun trying the different flavours and there is also beer if you need a chaser.”

“I enjoyed it! I was there a couple of years ago on a school trip to London and I had a great time... what I remember anyway. The food was delicious, I got plenty to keep me from slipping into alcohol poisoning from the delicious beers and vodka's, and the staff was kind enough to let me keep a menu for a souvenir! So the decor is a little cold, I didn't mind... the food was awesome!”

“Uninspiring euro-style bar with plastic furniture, bottled Polish beers and possibly the rudest proprietor in the whole of London. There are much better places to eat and drink in this area. Best avoided.”

“This bar Polish? You better believe. Ask what beer they have, bar maid replies, in a Polish accent "We have Strong Polish beer or not so strong Polish beer" - nice. Busy on a Thursday night with, you've guessed it Polish punters. Almost forgot to mention the Polish vodka, it's lethal.”
