Claridges Bar London Review

We all like a bit of posh now and again so a quick bevy at Claridge’s bar seemed like a good idea. The bar is a part of the legendary Claridge’s hotel in Mayfair known historically for its association with the aristocracy and world dignitaries and more recently for its sumptuous restaurant run by the volatile Mr Gordon Ramsey.

You feel rather grand just entering the hotel, almost like stepping back in time to the days of the Raj and when imperialism and colonialism were a part of England’s fabric. The bar in Claridge’s hotel doesn’t feel so grand, in fact it is like entering the bar of an aging ocean liner. Its dark colours from the oak panel flooring and red leather seats with an attempt at art deco make it feel dismal and uninviting.

The clientele are probably those staying in the hotel who must have plenty of spare cash knocking around although you’d never think it by looking at them. There were a few punters who had spilled over from a ball going on in one of the function rooms so they were all wearing DJs. The dress code is smart casual and the ambience not particularly pretentious which is refreshing for such an opulent and pricey establishment.

Claridge's drinks list is one of the most extensive I have ever seen. Designed for the connoisseur of alcoholic tipples, the list comprises of rums, gins, tequilas, whiskies, ports, sherries, cognacs, armagnacs with many rare and vintages that most of us will not be familiar with. An astonishing 16 types of vodka were available as well as an extensive cocktail and wine list.

You need a sack full of spare cash if you are going to test the menu thoroughly. A bottle of Krug Vintage, 1988 champagne will set you back £245.00, a cocktail £10.75, beers around £4.50 and a G&T £6. If you really want to blow your wages try a bar snack – 25g of royal beluga caviar will cost £120 or a lobster sandwich £23.

It is more of an occasion to go to Claridge’s to eat rather than to drink and apart from the attentive service and the massive drinks menu, only go if someone is paying for you – you are not missing much otherwise. joanne bestall (08 03 2004)

“In my eyes Claridges is the only hotel in London because of its prestige and tradition. admitedly it is quite pricy but at the end of the day you pay for what you get and you are paying for the service and the name, just like everything else. Claridges is a must do for everyone and it is worth every penny. The other reviews on this page of people putting claridges down are only jelous of what they can't afford to do often.”

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
