Flask London Review

Flask is featured in these Guides:

A naked chef?

Over 300 years old, The Flask is getting old gracefully. A pub full of character and middle-class characters, it offers a formidable food menu and a good choice of drinks (decent wine list, continental beers from Chimay to Dos Equis).

On a Saturday by 7pm it was pretty full (but not crammed) so take note if you want grub, you need to try and book a table. And trust me, you'll want their food.

The portions are generous, quality consistent and the prices are lovable. A steak and ale pie (with its excellently thick and tasty crust and tender chunks of beef) comes with creamy mash and green beans and costs around £8, as did a main of pesto cod.

And talking of lovable, the staff are a blommin' lovely lot. Not only are they smiley and swift, they're also strippers. Well, sort of. For 2006 Ena (Miss July and the bar manager) and 11 of her colleagues have got their clothes off for a calendar (only £6, people) in order to raise cash for a vital bit of kit for a cancer ward. So if you haven't got your calendar yet, you know where to come, if you have, come and get another one anyway - its for a great cause.

The Flask is a total gem of a pub. If you're in the 'hood, you can drop by to get super eats, a convivial atmosphere, a top outdoor space and genuinely nice staff. As they always say, if you don't Flask you don't get. Sophia Wong (24 01 2006)

Flask London Description

Known for its real ale, speciality draft beers and Sunday roasts, The Flask sits in the heart of Highgate Village and is very much a ‘village pub’.  Its large beer garden gets so busy in the summer that people tend to spill out onto the grassy knoll opposite, and on warm summer evenings The Flask fires up the BBQ and opens its own al fresco bar.

The Flask features in our Guide to the Best Beer Gardens in London, check out the others by clicking on: Top Beer Gardens in London.

Customer Reviews for Flask

“I have been eating and drinking at the Flask for years, and have always found it to be a charming pub with great atmosphere and good food. Even after the menu was revised a couple of years ago (along with the prices), the food remained of a high standard therefore paying that little extra seemed reasonable. Whether they were having an 'off' day yesterday, or have simply become complacent due to popularity and the knowledge they will always fill seats, is hard to say. However the £9.90 pricetag that accompanied the Sunday roast seemed grossly above reasonable considering the meal that was placed in front of me. Fatty, undercooked shoulder of lamb, with a few beans and carrots, and roast potatoes that appeared to have been boiled and deep fried to give them a crunchy outter. I rarely make a complaint about food but when you are paying near enough £10 for Sunday lunch, it's fair to say expectations are a little higher than average. You could forgive them if it was a one off, but my friend's caeser salad came floating in a half inch of water with wilted iceberg, and another friend was told his chips (the deep fried variety - not baked) would be 30 minutes.. I only hope the Flask sit up and take note because this is dragging an otherwise delightful pub down.”

“Nice local pub, but gets far too busy on hot sunny days, resulting in service being slow and poor. Good selection of wines and beers, in my opinion Flask is a much better winter drinking hole as you get a more local vibe and can take refugee in some cozy little areas inside. In the summer it is over run by youngsters on their summer term break. Lovely location, but I am a bias Highgater!”

“The best pub in North London bar none. Food is excellent value for money and the atmposhere just right for relaxed drinking. The only downside is that finding an empty table can sometimes be an issue.”

“I just thought it was your average pub looking from the outside and seeing the beer garden in the front (which has always been full in the summer when I drive past). This place is amazing. The most interesting little rooms that are on different levels, jut out from here and there and the mood is so unique. A mix of very, very old vault like rooms yet so modern. You'll have to see it for yourself. AND the food.... delicious and not overly priced.”

Loved

"Great traditional pub on the back streets of Kensington. Busy on a Thursday night and only £2.60 for a pint of Doom! Can't get much better than that in London these days...." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
