Funky Munky London Review

Funky Munky has never managed to reach the standard of its close rival, Babushka. The shiny pine interior - tables, chairs & trees - offers plenty of room to sit down and a short menu of bar snacks is an added incentive.
Camberwell is real student territory these days and as such, the bar attracts a laid-back pint-guzzling crowd who lend the place an unthreatening, will-you-be-my-friend sort of atmosphere. Louder, more chaotic and less sophisticated than its neighbour, the name displays a case of wishful thinking, but then any bar with the word 'funky' in its title has to be lying. (22 02 2010)

Funky Munky London Description

The Funky Munky has been a well established venue in Camberwell for over 10 years now. It is funky, unpretentious, friendly and attracts many local regulars, an abundance of arts students during term time and also those from further afield.

The daytime is relaxed, with a cafe bar atmosphere. Happy hour from 5pm - 7pm daily attracts a more upbeat after work/college custom. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the music is turned up as a selection of DJs play out their tunes. Sunday from 7pm is the Double Six Club - order your drinks from the bar, roll the dice, and if you roll a double six, your round is on the house!

An excellent food menu is provided by Funky Munchies, and food is served until 10pm, Tuesday - Sunday.

“2-4-1 cocktails between 5pm and 7pm every week day are a must, the menu has recently been updated and there are some real gems on the list. Pizzas and burgers are excelllent and terribly good value, although don't expect more that that! Burgers cost from £4 and chips are £2. The friday night DJ (open til 2) is awesome if you love mo-town & soul, the crowd is excellent and jovial - but do watch your bags - sometimes joviality spills over into petty crime. Overall, Funky Munky is one of my favourite camberwell bars/pubs - jolly good at almost any time, be it early evening cocktails or late night dancing. Have your wits about you though - i don't want to make it sound like a crime den - but caution is advised. Don't let it put you off though - it hasn't me!”

“This bar has been recently been refurbished and now has a better layout including a bigger dancing area. The place is great for a late drink Thurs-Sat, with average priced drinks. The crowd are mainly students in grunge/hippy clothes. The staff on a whole are cool. On a negative note it seems the management haven''t really learnt their lessons from before, they still leave the dance floor area stacked up with chairs and tables whcih doesnt ultilise the free space and they cram far to many people in the place which makes it difficult to get to the bar. ”
