Garlic & Shots London Review

Garlic and Shots in Soho is a Rock & Roll bar, Swedish style. Though not, unfortunately some of you may think, brimmed full of our Swedish friends.

In the heart of Soho, just off Old Compton St, this heavily Gothic styled bar doesn't rise from the previous evenings death till late evening after the other pubs in the area have closed. Most of the night crawlers creep down from equally gothic pubs such as The Intrepid Fox round the corner to continue their drinking.

Upstairs will become cozy as the midnight hour approaches, but fear not you can always brave the basement, candle lit only it's decked out all Goth like, with skulls, spider webs and its very own crypt. (There's also a bar downstairs for those of you too lazy to climb back up.) Or you can sit out in the back beer garden, with canopy and outdoor heaters the elements shouldn't disturb you too much.

Food is available at Garlic and Shots, with the bar staffs recommendation being the aptly named 'Vampire steak with a pepper sauce, with potatoes + garlic' at £14.50. Kinda Gothic man. Shots are £2.50 - sounds pricy but by the time you rock into this place you'll be lining them up. paulc (10 10 2004)

“My experience of this place is far from good. When I arrived first for the booking, a slight head tilt was given to me as to where I was sitting. When they learned that not all of us were eating mains as some choose to eat tapa's, at £10.95 a plate, they obviously did not like this and the manager stood behind the bar all night glaring at us with dagger eyes. It put me off, and I felt wrestles as I tired to eat my food drenched in oil, presented badly and failed to impress me for it's price. When we received the bill, there was an error with being charged too much, they corrected it, but this time, slapt a 12% service charge without any indication on the menu that this was the case. The manager's face would have cracked if he attempted to smile. We thought we would try out the plenty of shots they do in their state of the art "vampire bar". What a load of cheap material poorly designed to give a dark and dingy, uncomfortable and boring look. There was no atmosphere, it was not "spooky" or gave you any sense of feeling "gothic" but instead I had a feeling of urgency to make a swift exit. The only positive thing about this place is the actual decor in the restaurant, the rest of it and the crew were an absolute disappointment. Where I am grateful for the garlic experience but you know that saying, "been there, done that, ticked off"? That's for this place.”

“I don't think it was as fab as that last user review said. It's called Garlic & Shots I know, but after eating there it's put me off eating garlic again - a little garlic is fine, but drowning in it - I don't think so.”

“One of the best bars in london! don't be scared off by the crowd - they're all sweethearts deep down inside. Music wise this is the place to be when tired of the mainstream muzac played in most bars, here you'll get proper rock - all night long! Yeah.”

Loved

"Great traditional pub on the back streets of Kensington. Busy on a Thursday night and only £2.60 for a pint of Doom! Can't get much better than that in London these days...." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
