Janet's Bar 30 Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, London, SW7 — view map
Janet's Bar London Review
Beneath the Brompton Hotel, Janet’s Bar is quite unlike anything else in this part of London. From Old Brompton Road, look out for the huge sign with a cartoon of the proprietor who bears an uncanny resemblance to Wilma from the Flintstones. In the flesh, she’s almost as wacky; a bubbly New Yorker with a real sense of fun who’s decked out the venue in her own fabulous style – gilded mirrors made out of old spectacles, rollers, hairbrushes and tennis racquets. Pictures of patrons adorn the walls, in varying states of intoxication, as well as fairy lights, neon signs, rickety old fans, Mickey Mouse balloons and I even found a calling card for a taxi firm in Woollacombe. It’s an Aladdin’s cave. Or rather, it’s Janet’s cave.
Staff behind the tiny bar were quick to welcome us to this quirky-kitsch world, which serves up pretty much every spirit you can think of, plus a selection of wines and spirits at OK prices. If you’re feeling peckish, they also have menus from several local restaurants, including sushi, pizza and Argentinean fare, which they’ll order for you and bring to your table.
There’s a cute little terrace at the front, plus soulful live music twice a night, seven days a week. Whether you drop in for a couple of cheeky ones later in the evening or hire out the place for a party, Janet’s Bar will do its best to make you feel at home. Whether you’d want your home to be anything like this curious place is another matter entirely…

This place never fails to impress me. The drinks are excellent and my friends and I love singing along to the live music while socialising with fellow customers and sipping on the delicious cocktails!
This is my favourite bar in London as one has a unique experience ever time you go! Also janet is hilarious!”

I have never had a bad night in janet's because you never know what you're going to get. Go in with a sense of humour and expect the unexpected. The drinks are like the bar staff tall slim and tasty and the music rocks”

Had a fabulous evening at Janet's Bar-went with 10 friends-the cocktails were yummy and the music great! Janet is really cool and VERY smart. All the young people go in to speak to her-the place is alwas packed-Janet knows how to pick barmaids-they all are fun.
The last review seems to be a lie because there are no barmen and the only way there would be 1 drunk in the bar on a Friday night is if people are still at work.
This bar is not for people who "don't get it"-it is a one-off, very cool, bar with a sense of humour-that is the point.”

This place is without a doubt one of the worst cocktail bars (or any kind of bar!) I have ever visited. I went there on a Friday evening and the place was deserted apart from one drunk. The ‘kooky’ decorations just looked tired and dusty. The bar was sticky, the menus covered in spilt drink, the floor dirty and the toilets utterly horrific. And worst of all, our cocktails were terrible – made with little skill or knowledge, and in my case, omitting one of the main ingredients! When I complained the barman didn’t seem to understand why it was a problem that he’d used Vodka instead of Amaretto. Utterly awful.”
