Montgomery Place London Review
If your idea of a cocktail and a light bite is a Pina Colada and some potato wedges then Notting Hill’s Montgomery Place might not be the place for you. If on the other hand you want to be suitably impressed by a wine and cocktail menu as extensive as it is varied – with staff who know each tipple as if they had crushed the grapes themselves and with dishes that actually accompany your drink (this is deliberate as the emphasis here is on the alcohol) – then M.P is definitely for you!
The ethos behind M.P is a revival in old school drinking – before binge drinking and vodka Redbulls took over and this is something I really loved about my experience here. Both the cocktail and wine menu’s (they do not sell any kind of alco-pops or draft beer) were extensive and I was astounded by the manager’s vast knowledge of any drink myself or my boyfriend (Tim) selected from the menu. Redin Dokaj – the manager even advised us as to which dishes went best with our drinks. The emphasis at MP is all about quality – not quantity. The dishes were a small but perfect accompaniment to our drinks – and they tasted superb. We ate duck, beef and lamb – the average price being around the £6 mark per dish.
The cocktails were £7.50 and well worth it – I recommend Love and Day especially if you like your cocktail sweet and fruity – I honestly could have drunk them all night. The only problem you may face is deciding which one to chose – as each drink has a unique history of its own – many dating back to the turn of the century. Even the humble Pina Colada has a past dating back to 1954. Tim stuck to red wine – he chose a Chilean and as a wine drinker he was especially impressed to find that they have a vast selection from regions including Mexico and Brazil. The average glass being £5.
Though the bar itself is small, there is some outside seating should the English weather permit. Inside the emphasis is on drinking and the bar is filled with every imaginable spirit the pallet could possibly want. Stylishly decorated inside in dark oak and browns MP is certainly well worth a visit – even if you are foolish enough not to try one of their delicious cocktails you will at least leave a little more knowledgeable!
