Navajo Joe London Review

Book a table at Navajo Joe

Situated on King Street in Covent Garden, Navajo Joes Mexican Restaurant and Bar certainly has a prime location. The low key facade does not attract too much attention from the rabble of tourists milling around aimlessly watching street performers and other tourists.

On entering you will normally be asked if you are eating or just drinking. If you are drinking you will be guided to the bar on the ground level, with most of the eating being done on the balcony and, in the daytime and early evening, basement levels. The decor is modern and fairly stylish yet not pretentiously so.

The bar sports an impressive Cocktail menu and an even more impressive 250 varieties of Tequila. The massive array of bottled spirits lining the back of the bar are broken only by 3 large projection screens displaying Native American chiefs, while the animated bar staff toss bottles in the air.

Drinking here can become fairly crowded upstairs with people walking past the narrow bar to get to the toilets and tables in the rest of the building. This renders the bar area unsuitable for larger crowds in the daytime and early evening. The lower restaurant arear is cleared of tables and used as a bar later in the evening.

Both bar and table service is to a high standard with friendly staff always willing to talk you through some of the more unusual drinks on the menu. If you get in to the experimental mood you can always expect a hefty bar bill at the end of the night. The food is more reasonably priced although it can not be considered authentic South Western American due to some of the more trendy serving equipment.

Navajo Joe London Description

Named after the legendary Indian character, it is suitably decorated in funky contemporary colours of the desert, with seductive lighting and feel-good music. The stunning centrepiece of the place must be the huge slab of white marble, that is the bar - an impressive focal point in anyone's books. Behind, here is arguably the largest selection of tequila outside Mexico - something like 200 mezcals and 40 Cuban rums.

“Well, we went for the food but actually the star of the show is the basement bar. Really cool little spot and the dj was brilliant. Really nice to find a west end place thats not rammed to the rafters with ponces on the pull, just cool understated vibe and lovely deep house music. I recommend it thoroughly for the drinks and music, get your food elsewhere though! x”

“Unfortunately this is one restaurant I cannot provide a good review for. I went there for a birthday party do - we had to pre-order our meals (which I think were from a Xmas menu at £28-something perhead!). Drinks at the bar before dinner were ok, nothing special, and a bit pricey considering they weren't THAT fab and I know the area well and where to get better priced decent cocktails ;-) Service: Average - as it should be - not worth the extra charge we had to give for party of 10! Food: The worst I've eaten in town. I have been to a fair few eateries in my time in London, and this is the worst I have to say. Food was lukearm/cold on arrival at table. Main course was also cold and hard and the meat in my enchillada, well, just imagine your worst piece of beef and that's it! Sorry folks, I wouldn't bother - there are much better places within 5 minutes of this place and for less money. My total bill was £40! Not worth it at all.”

“I have been here twice. The first time was pretty dismal but the second was just shocking. My dad was over from Oz so after a busy time seeing the sights in covent garden, we thought we'd have a quick bite & a drink. It was 2pm with just one other table. we ordered light meals. After 30 minutes we were still waiting. I eventually got up to ask & we were told 5 minutes. After about 10mins both meals arrived. Dismal. Cannot believe such poor food took so long. Waitress too a second drink order from my dad (a bottle of beer) then forgot to bring it to him!! He was not impressed. Thank goodness we visited another really good restuarant before his vacation finished. This restuarant looks great & the barman makes fantastic cocktails but just does not seem to take fodd & dining seriously. The quality of the food, for the price, was a joke. Never again! ANd some-one, please wake up the waitresses!!”

“Lovely venue, but the cocktails were full of ice, and with the amount of shorts we drunk and were still able to walk out there's no way they weren't watered down. Food was pretty average. I know they were busy at the beginning of the night, but when the food came it looked like it was slopped on the plate, and tasted pretty similar. A bit of effort wouldn't have gone amiss!”

“Contender for Worst Restaurant in London 2008 - table and cutlery filthy upon arrival. Drinks - 80% ice. Service - 2 hours for 2 courses of tex-mex slops which could have been bettered by pre-made Supermarket meals. Avoid like the plague - worst restaurant in London I have ever been to.”

“My first experience there was on a date with my now amazing boyfriend. The bar was a perfect setting: romantic yet relaxing and the cocktails were very impressive as was the service. My only problem would be the lack of room, but there's hardly much they can do about that... Have been back many times and continue to love it.”

“My partner and I arrange to have dinner one evening with friends. The place was over crowded, we had to wait 20 mins for a table even though we had booked in advance. Once seated we ordered our foods and drinks (the waiting staff were quite pleasant) Unfortunately when the food arrived it was cold so we sent it back and received apologies we then had to wait a further 30 mins for the food to come back out to find that it was the same food it was only heated up in the microwave (which I did not think was allowed for seafood) and it was still just bearly warm. We complained yet again to the Manager (who was all about 12 years old!) and which he pushing his fingers into my food and stirred them about - absolutely disgusting service, a horrible evening out and will definitely not be going there again. As for my friends, none of them will be going either!”

“Love the change in brand from American to stylish chic Europeon. The menu is well set out and something for everyone, especially the Amusements, fantastic colors and flavours. Joes Bar downstairs is a diamond. Best vibe in London with no door charge. Well done on the transfermation.”

“The music downstairs is some of the best I have heard in London. A real down to earth funky vibe. The atmos is nearly always superb and the cocktails are of a good standard (although they do ponce about a abit to much!). Food up stairs is good if a little pricey, and the service is always very honest.”

Loved

"This is the best salsa bar i have been to!! It had a hell of a lot to do with the people though. A very mixed group of people who all like to dance and have FUN. I had so much fun dancing with everyone..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
