O'Neill's Irish Bar (Earls Court) London Review

A short walk from Earl’s Court, and you’ll find O’Neill’s - the perfect place for a quick pint and a spot of pub grub. Spacious, with a bar stretching the length of the room, there’s plenty of seating available, with a separate non-smoking area to boot. The menu is typical for pub food, an endless list of meat dishes, including the choice for this evening’s visit, the lamb burger (£5.25) complete with mint jelly, and the gourmet steak burger (£5.50), accompanied with tomato chutney and onion rings. Now if you were nursing a broken arm, or any other hand-related ailment, I wouldn’t recommend either of these dishes. The reason? Because you need two hands to even lift up these mammoth portions. After dining at O’Neill’s it’s fair to say that your hunger will have dispersed.

There’s a good choice of drinks on tap at O’Neill’s (all reasonably priced), including the classics Heineken and Grolsch, and being an Irish pub, of course Guinness and Caffrey's. Talking of the Emerald Isle, the walls are decorated with photographs of Gaelic football, men enjoying a pint of the black stuff, and beautiful shots of the Irish countryside, to gaze at whilst talking blarney with your friends.

O’Neill’s caters for the sports enthusiast, with a number of screens positioned sensibly around the pub. Early arrivals may be fortunate enough to grab one of the comfy sofas provided, before kicking back and enjoying the game. Other forms of entertainment include the Monday night quiz night, as well as the occasional live band.

With St. Patrick’s Day fast approaching, O’Neill’s is the perfect venue to go and enjoy the craic. Doors open early at 10am, allowing the celebrations to begin with an Irish breakfast, and of course the obligatory pint of Guinness. Come the evening, and drinkers will be able to enjoy a bit of a jig, courtesy of a live band that will be performing. Daniel Brogan (12 03 2007)
