Rossopomodoro is the place you go to when you want to do some serious, and I mean serious, eating of Italian food. From deep fried pasta to pizza and back to pasta again - this sums up my first experience of this truly robust eatery. You can’t help but want to overindulge the moment you get handed the menu.
On top of the fact that all their ingredients are specially shipped in from Italian region of Campania, all their chefs trained in Naples, and all their pizzas made in brick wood burning pizza ovens; they employ some of the most smoldering, charming and friendly waiters in this city.
As I mentioned before, my visit was a gluttonous event of mammoth proportion. To start with we had a platter of mixed fritters. It consisted of fried dough balls with tomato sauce and grana cheese, deep fried potato dumplings, peas and risotto balls, and fried bucatini pasta omelets. Each type of nibble was tasty, but the star players were definitely the fried pasta omelets.
Now here comes the mad bit, we had another round of starters – a small pan-fried potato gateau with Neapolitan salami, provola cheese and bagnoli pecorino cheese, and a Neapolitan cheese fondue. Yep, another round of tasty dough. The potato cake was, fortunately, light yet packed with flavours; while the fondue was everything you want it to be – rich and strong.
Don’t get me wrong, Rossopomodoro also serves loads of leafy salads and less carbohydrate-laden dishes, but we were on a roll. I could hardly leave the place without sampling their signature pizza – La Verace – and so I made room. It’s the only pizza they add extra virgin olive oil from Sorrento on after it’s cooked. It was thin, crisp and packed with tomato sauce and buffalo mozzarella. My eating partner went for something totally different – a grilled chicken breast and a selection of veg – which was a smooth and refreshing choice. So, if you want a full-on gastronomic experience, then look no further.
