Steam Passage London Review
The Steam Passage in Angel has just been refurbished. From the dreary, tatty establishment it once was, has sprung out a warm, happy, good atmosphered (perhaps inherited from it's expansion into what was the indian restaurant next door) public drinking house.
The warm Georgian colour scheme made the cold wintery day seem a bit brighter, and the abstract prints and photos on the wall were noticable enough to make the place seem just a bit interesting. The staff were friendly and happy, and oddly enough the guinness was excellent - nearly putting o'neills down the road to shame.
The food was pretty good, trying to follow the bar's motto "a drinking pub you want to eat in, the food pub you want to drink in". The bar pretty much becomes a lunch place for some of the Upper St workers during the afternoon, but in the evening caters for a more modern, upbeat crowd.
Live Jazz music plays in the back on Sunday (sounds like a nice way to spend a hangover) and they've got a DJ on Friday nights.
Not the most outstanding pub in the great sprawl that creates Angel's Upper St, by any means, but there are a heck of a lot worse places to spend a pint or two.

What a Transformation. If anyone reading this can recall this place in it's previous light, then they will understand how much this pub has transformed. A popular lunch spot for the local office workers of Angel during the week. Whilst Friday's & Saturdays show a different side with and fast and freindly staff ready to whip you up some cocktails. DJ Chino provides a healthy mix of House and Rn'B on the Dancefloor at the back till 12:30(ish) [Bar shuts at 1am]. With music levels louder at the back for the dancers and quiter for those who wish to talk at the front and side. Sunday creates a freindly atmosphere helped by the live music, perfect for recovering from the previous nights. A great new addition to the somewhat crowded Upper Street scene, but by no means over shadowed.”
