The Angel London Review

A great pub. A very fine and very rare example of a traditional bar in central London. Did we say this pub was great?

The Angel in St. Giles Street has somehow managed to survive unmolested as a good honest bar whist all around was knocked to the ground in favour of modern office blocks.

The guys working here are very proud of the place and you can see why. The décor is all original: gold wallpaper, patterned tiles, dark woods and deep carpets. Everything is also immaculate – their toilets have to be one of cleanest in London. The bar is split into four main areas with two large’ish saloons, a converted garage with heaters, and a small room tucked out the back.

It took a while to notice that there was something very different about this place, but just before leaving, it dawned on us – there is a complete absence of bollocks promotion posters and other marketing tat. You are sitting in a place originally created to get away from it all and the owners of The Angel have kept it just that. More bar owners should think of doing the same.

Something else to note is chess sets and dartboard –The Angel wants you to relax and stay a while. Great stuff.

Customer Reviews for The Angel

“You have probably been past the Angel a thousand times and thought, I bet that place is a complete dive, but low and behold, it is a surprisingly appealing intimate traditional boozer which pulls what would seem like a regular crowd of punters. Lots of original Victorian features too and none of those tatty pub posters/leaflets littering the walls. The only drawback is it's a 'Samuel Smiths' pub, so a limited selection of beers on tap, and no Guiness!”

“This pub totally caught me by surprise. It looks dark and dingy on the outside, but inside was warm and cosy. Good beer, good staff and a good mix of friendly people make the Angel a diamond.”

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
