The Crooked Billet London Description

The Crooked Billet has a tremendously welcoming feeling with locals congregating in the atmospheric bar and dogs mooching idly around their feet. Wimbledon Common is just round the corner, making the Billet a fine pit-stop, but in truth it's a wonderfully convivial pub for anyone in search of good old-fashioned drinking and great food.

The name 'The Crooked Billet' means a reference point for travellers. A billet is a big stick or post, in the pubs case one that is not straight! There's been a pub on this site since 1509. At around 1776 the current building was erected which consisted of the area nearest the bar only. When Young's bought the pub in 1888 they purchased the cottage next door and extended.

Its said that an Irish woman haunts the cellar. And legend has it that Oliver Cromwell's father is said to have died in the pub....

Celebrating their German ties, The Crooked Billet prides itself on creating a warm and friendly environment. Help yourself to their Jaegermeister machine or satisfy your senses with good wholesome German gastronomy washed down with a delicious Erdinger Weissbier.

One of the things they certainly don't do by halves is their annual Oktoberfest. With Lederhosen, special lagers and traditional German food they ensure you'll have a memorable experience!

“This pub is quiet nice in the summer when everybody sits outside on the grass field in front of the pub, but food and drinks is heavily overpriced which is odd because it is hardly a prime location for a pub.”

“I am the landlady of The Crooked Billet and would like to suggest that you pay little attention to "Samantha" who has taken the trouble to place her "review" on about 3 different websites in a somewhat vindictive way. We rarely get complaints, we have shown a 30% increase in trade in the last 2 years and please come and see for yourself. As we say in the trade, you can't please all of the people all of the time but I'm pretty sure we please most of the people most of the time.”

“I would give this less if it was possible. On sunday I took my parents, brother and his girlfriend for Sunday lunch at the Crooked Billet. It is pricey (£11.95 for lamb shank. £10.95 for roast beef) But I thought it would be worth it. We arrived at 2.30pm and we were told we would have to wait half hour for a table which we did. When we were seated 45 minutes later we were told they had run out of lamb shank and pork leaving only the beef or they could cook some lamb chops. We ordered 4 beef and yorkshires and the lamb chops. When it arrived 30 minultes later (A total of 90 minutes after we had arrived) there were 3 tiny roast potatoes and 3 slices of fatty, gristley, grey microwaved beef. No yorkshire and the vegetables were red and green peppers stirfried with corgette. In fish stock I think?? The 2 lamp chops were tiny and so overcooked my brother couldn't cut them. I called the waiter, Michael, over and said I was not happy. He asked me what I wanted him to do about it, go in the kitchen and cook some more beef? I said had we known that we would have to wait so long, for everything to run out and then be served such a bad meal we would have gone somewhere else. He asked me again, what I wanted him to do about it. I asked him what he was going to do? He went off and came back and said they would knock £2 off each meal. I think due to the lack of yorkshire pud the price should have been reduced anyway from an expensive £10.95 per meal. When we finshed and ordered ”
