The Slug & Lettuce London Review

Book a table at The Slug & Lettuce

I certainly enjoy a bargain and have been known to get feverish during the sales. I love 50% off. I've been know to cut and collect vouchers like a magpie hoarding shiny finds. I've recently discovered the joys of 'Buy one get two free'. Two! The fact that I'm so easily seduced by a cleverly placed marketing offer doesn't bother me; truth be known, I love that feeling you get when you've saved a few pence. It's a little ray of sunshine through the sometimes grey clouds of consumerism.

My only gripe is that restaurants don't seem to partake in special offers nearly enough. Sure there are vouchers you can snip form the newspaper which let you eat for a fiver but you have to order from a set menu. You have to choose between a starter or a dessert. Oh, and you have to eat after 2pm but before 5. On a Wednesday. But there is one restaurant brand that delivers on the specials front: Slug and Lettuce. From Happy Mondays (50%) to bargain sunday roasts and seasonal promotions, you’d be hard pressed not to have a great meal without blowing the bank.

I dined at the Slug and Lettuce's County Hall on the Southbank. It's perfectly located for (almost) riverside dining, and is surrounded by some of London's top attractions including the London Eye, The Jubilee Gardens and the London Aquarium, so makes an ideal place to dine when out and about and enjoying all London has to offer. In the evenings County Hall bustles with hard workers seeking a little alcoholic reward and a relaxed place to eat.

The food at the Slug & Lettuce far exceeded any expectations (and put to rest misgivings) that I had. Traditional bar snacks, starters, mains and platters to share are sure to make your mouth water when looking over the menu. There is certainly a lack of healthy options (and I'm always wary of a menu that comes with small print), but it seems that choosing to dine here is to indulge in a little pub food treat - not a diet one could live on, but fine for an occasional self reward. I ate loaded potato shells (a dish I loved as a child and ordered for a swift hit of nostalgia; it didn't disappoint) followed by scampi with fries. Another old favourite that would have benefited from a little greenery on the plate, but was delicious none the less. By the time the dessert menu was offered I was far too full to order one - something that's never happened to me before! I was tempted by sticky toffee pudding but the size of the first two courses stopped me. If you've got a sweet tooth, make sure you save room.

Extremely friendly service really added to the experience, with an attentive waiter and chipper bar staff working to ensure everyone was having a good evening. And looking around it did seem that everyone was having just that. It could have been the amount they had drunk, the fact that they knew they were getting a bargain, or some joke I wasn't in on, but all the other diners had smiles on their faces. I smiled too, knowing that I had some money left in my pocket - a real rarity for me on an evening out in London. Paul Wells (03 02 2010)

Loved

"By far my favourite restaurant in South London. I can't go on about this place enough. The food is consistently amazing, the atmosphere is perfectly Moroccan and the owner is so friendly he'll make you..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Long story short: Upper Street branch, crappy, rude service. Waited forever for our drinks. We had to before the next table arrives, but it took them so long to print the damn bill, we wasted another half..." Which venue is this?
