Torts Bar & Restaurant London Review
Bar stroke restaurant, slash function place part salsa dancing venue. What a refreshing break from the other holborn style old man pubs.
Having walked along the whole of High Holborn from the Chancery Lane end of town I was left unimpressed and rather young, that was of course until I stumbled upon this place. Formally known as Corts, Torts is modern, stylish, refreshing and relaxing.
The interior is very different compared to the other selection of bars in the Holborn area. Bright orange and blue cover the walls throughout the bar and restaurant and spreads right through to the WC's. The huge mirror on one side of the wall makes the relatively small top bar seem bigger, as does the modern style lighting.
The tables and chairs are completed with candlelight and the front window is occupied by a rather nice looking sofa. If I had to describe Torts with one word I would say 'intimate'. This bar seems perfect for a date or an intimate chat with just a couple of close friends.
Drinks consist of alcopops and wine amongst the usual beverage. If you're feeling peckish then you can help yourself to the pistacchio and jelly bean machines placed on the bar. Or if you need something a bit more substantial then try out their restaurant. They have a menu as well as a specials board and the prices seem very reasonable, pizza for a fiver... not bad.
Alternatively if you feel like trying out salsa dancing then tuesday evening's the night for you. This added addition to Torts improves its appeal even more. Classes are held for begginers or the intermediate and you don't even need to bring along a partner. I'm guessing these classes are held in the downstairs function room which is usually home to parties at the weekends. So don't bother attempting to come in for a drink other than week nights as it is likely that the bar has been booked up. For more info about the salsa dancing check out www.salsaymambo.com.

“On the day of the London power cut in August 2003 I was with a group of 17 on a course around the corner from Torts in Bloomsbury Square. We were unable to get to the restaurant we'd pre-booked in the West End as there were no Tubes, we couldn't get taxis for love nor money, and it was raining!
A couple in our group went looking for an alternative and they were lucky enough to come across Torts. The staff were fantastic and at extremely short notice set us up in the private function room, where the food and service were excellent.
We've just booked again for December!”
