Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race 2010: London's Best Bars & Pubs on the River Thames

Fluid London's Top Tens for Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race 2010: London's Best Bars & Pubs on the River Thames
The Oxford & Cambridge boat race is one of London's greatest and most historic outdoor social gatherings. The first race was staged in 1829 but it was not until 1845 that it was moved to the present stretch of the Thames between Putney and Mortlake. If like 1000's of others you fancy popping down to observe this aquatic class then it is strongly advised not to drive - this area packs out on race day. And besides, why would you want to - this 4 mile stretch of the river Thames offers some of the best riverside pubs and bars in London. In this guide you will find a list of Fluid Foundation's favourite drinking holes from which to survey the battle along the Thames and to make it easier we've put them in order, from the start of the race through to the end. If you're not interested in the Boat Race these are still great Riverside Pubs with fantastic views all year round!

Honourable mentions

Picture of Old Ship, a Bar in Hammersmith, London

Old Ship (Bar)
25 Upper Mall, Riverside, Hammersmith, London, W6 9TD | Cuisine: Pub

Middle of the race - A real fave with the young and loaded. This bar packs out more than you can imagine. Arrive early if you want a table. On race day be hopeful of standing space, but they do provide a big screen in case your view of the river is restricted.

Picture of The Bull's Head & Nuay's Thai Restaurant, a Bar, Restaurant in Barnes, London

The Bull's Head & Nuay's Thai Restaurant (Bar / Restaurant)
373 Lonsdale Road, Barnes, London, SW13 9PY | Cuisine: Thai

End of the race - Set a wee way back from the Thames thanks to a reasonably busy road and with a large wall to protect against tidal surges The Bull's Head might not sound like the perfect place, but it is a beautiful pub. Great Thai food too.

Picture of The Rutland, a Bar in Hammersmith Bridge, London

The Rutland (Bar)
15 Lower Mall, Riverside, Hammersmith Bridge, London, W6 9DJ |

Middle of the race - Just down from Hammersmith bridge this pub is heaving on boat race day. A reasonable amount of standing space outside makes this a popular meeting place as the boats zip past after coming under Hammersmith Bridge.

Loved

"Totally awesome! Went for a night out in town with friends and after reading the raving reviews, we decided to give Aqua Spirit Bar a try. And, yes - it’s a winner! We all agreed that Aqua is THE place..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Firstly the location, don't come here unless you like parking at the back of a dodgy industrial estate and hunting for the restaurant amongst blocks of flats. We arrived for our meal and were told there..." Which venue is this?
