St Patrick's Day & guide to the best Irish bars & pubs in London.
St Patrick's Day, March 17th. The date is fast becoming as inscribed on Londoners minds as say Christmas Day or even their own birthdays, such is the excitement generated by it. The Irish though need no excuse to enjoy the craic, drop into most Irish bars & pubs on any day of the year and there's always a cracking atmosphere to saviour.
Overview: Kilburn - Born on 2nd September 2005, The Good Ship is a bar, pub, club and music venue all rolled into one. "A Proper St Patrick's Day Tear Up" - from roughly 5pm to 8pm they will have DJs from 11.30 playing half the Pogues, Dubliners, Sinead, Thin Lizzy, U2 etc and the other half a mix of old school soul, funk, disco and indie dancefloor fillers. Open til 4am, £5 in.
Overview: Ealing - The Haven are running a week long festival from Sat 10th to Sat 17th March. Through the week, their menu will feature traditional Irish dishes. Both quizzes on Sun & Tues will have an Irish theme. On St. Patrick's Day a local Irish Dancing School are doing a set in the pub.
Overview: Marylebone - An authentic Irish pub that does decent food and a good pint of guinness. For St Patrick's Day 'O Conor Don' are starting the celebration on Friday with a Special Irish Day menu and live music in their basement bar. Showing the rugby on Saturday, 10 extra Guinness taps, irish menu and live music - a choice London pub to be for Paddy's Day.
Overview: Shepherds Bush - Kenilworth Castle is one of the three "old man's" pubs in the area, but is somehow the only one which avoids being totally banal. This is the Irish one, the other more substantially bland ones being very uncomfortably English. Says it all really....
Overview: Kentish Town - The Lord Nelson is an authentic Irish pub that specialises in live music and showing the hurling and Gaelic football. Generally full of Irish and locals. For St Patrick's Day there'll be Gaelic footy & racing on the TV and Specials on the drinks menu during the day, followed by Irish live music - a two piece band.
Overview: Clerkenwell - The jury is still out on whether Mulligan's can match up to the previous incarnation of O'Hanlon's - a fine Irish Bar. But it slips in here for the time being as it still has traditional Irish entertainment - the Northern Celts session band, every Thursday and that includes St Patrick's Day.
Overview: Holborn - Celebrate St Patrick's Day at The Yorkshire Grey Monday March 17th. Irish specials on the lunch-time menu and a good Irish vibe throughout the evening and night. Guinness , Baileys, Bushmills, Jameson. Business card draw for a trip for two to Cork exclusive to Yorkshire Grey customers. Draw at 9pm. Irish, English, Scots, Welsh, French, Spanish, Polish, European, Asian, The Americas, Aussies and Kiwis?? all welcome in numbers.
