The Windmill London Review
The Windmill is featured in these Guides:
Wow how the Windmill has changed. It used to be a rather drab and outdated venue that didn’t do justice to its location which, being right on the common, is one of the best in Clapham. Those days are history now though and the Windmill has had a major overhaul transforming it beyond all recognition.
It’s now so chic. Leather sofas, dark wood and wicker lights give a modern twist which perfectly compliments the beautiful period features. It can now hold its head up and give any of the trendy bars and restaurants in Clapham a run for its money.
The dining room is housed in a conservatory which is no less chic. Its olive coloured walls, church pews and twinkly fairy lights offer an oasis away from the bustling bar.
The menu has everything from fish, grills and pasta to lighter options like sandwiches and salads. I start with tiger prawns sautéed with garlic and chilli. The prawns are fresh and the flavours are balanced. The chilli gives the dish a kick but is not overpowering. For main I have spinach and ricotta canneloni. The pasta is slightly chewy but the tomato sauce is delicate and the spinach and ricotta make a tasty combination.
My companion has pate du maison which is smooth and meaty. To follow he has beef burger with had cut chips. The burger is juicy and perfectly pink in the middle and the chips taste wonderfully homemade.
For desert I have sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and my companion has homemade apple tart. The toffee sauce is beautifully sweet and complements the rich and warming pudding. The apple tart is fluffy and fruity.
Our meal is washed down with a bottle of Venetian Pinot Grigio which we choose from an assorted wine list which has something for every palate.
The waiting staff couldn’t do enough to make sure we had an enjoyable evening. They were attentive, helpful and very efficient.
So if you’re in Clapham it would be a real shame to miss the Windmill. It’s a popular and vibrant venue that hasn’t lost any of its character despite its facelift. It just looks much better these days that’s all.

“I spent an evening at the Windmill a few weeks ago and I certainly wasn't disappointed! The pub itself is beautifully decorated - with large, plush leather sofas and candle-lit tables.
My friends and I were particularly impressed with our dining table, which was surrounded by fairy lights and immaculately presented.
Our food arrived quickly and piping-hot - I tucked into a delicious Morroccan Lamb burger followed by a generous portion of sticky-toffee pudding.
After our gorgeous meal we reclined on the leather sofas and drank copious bottles of wine.
I absolutely loved the atmosphere in the Windmill and the staff were also polite and warm. My friends and I are already planning our next visit to the Windmill!”

“After my previous bad experience, i decided: "come on, lets try their famous roast beef"; so i went there on a sunday. Took me 15 minutes to get the table when i saw a tabe empty and to be set up for almost ten minutes. The soup i had as a starter was nice but the roast beef... the meat was overcooked, dry, there were only 3 roast potatoes and 2 new potatoes, and the carrots and parsnips were like mash, like fod for a baby; and i waited almost 20minutes since i finished my soup until i get that main. Then the dessert, the chocolate fudge cake was floating in a sea of watered chocolate sauce, no taste of chocolate in the sauce at all. When i said about the sauce, i was told that "sauce can not be made thicker" how about, at least, more taste? So i paid and as i was leaving i decided to not come back again to this place, 2 times i went there, 2 times not succesfully as i expect, a shame.”

“A shame, i was so expected about my visit to this famous pub...
The pub looks stunning in decoration, but i reckon the staff were short, it took me more than 15 minutes to order a pint, on a Thursday evening when it was not really busy, there were only 3 waiting staff serving. Then i ordered food, prawns as a starter - too much chilli, couldn't finish off - too much chilli, then sausage and mash, well, the mash looked like brick, so dry, maybe made 3/5 days before, the onion gravy, however, was excellent. As desert i had ice cream, 3 small scoops served in a soup plate whitout any decoration; when i asked the waiter about it, he answered me in such a rude way "ice cream is served like that".. and then, when i was going to leave, i saw a kitchen guy with such a filthy uniform, no appron, walking through the pub, i just hope that guy is in no contact with the food at any time, his uniform was horrendous.”

“This is one of the worst pubs I hav ever been to in London. I went last Sunday for Sunday lunch, paid 12.50 each for roast beef with my wife and friends which took two and a half hours to arrive. Stupidly we ordered some desert, after an hour we were informed that no deserts were available. Asking for a refund was met with disgust by the arrogant and obnoxious manager. All in all a disgusting level of service and somewhere I woudl suggest you never go.”

“The pub has a policy of plastic cups for everyone who sits outside whether you want to go onto the park or not. I can't understand this as it cannot be for safety reasons as bottles are readily available. Is it just me who like my beer out of a pint glass??? The food was very ordinary as is everything about this pub.”
